Cultural heritage is far more than just a historical backdrop or a tourist photo opportunity. Tensions constantly arise between the need for conservation, identity, living spaces and tourism: how many visitors can a sensitive site accommodate? When does tradition become a performance? And how can World Heritage and cultural heritage be presented in such a way that they give rise to genuine experiences rather than mere moments of consumption?
In this workshop, we take a practical look at tangible and intangible cultural heritage – from World Heritage sites and traditional crafts to living customs – and discuss their significance for tourism, regions and society. Using concrete examples from Austria, we explore issues of sustainability, visitor management, economic value creation and the development of offerings tailored to specific target groups.
Participants will gain practical insights into how to approach World and Cultural Heritage in their own destination and develop a more critical perspective on how cultural heritage can be transformed into high-quality and authentic tourist experiences.
The workshop will be led by Doris Rom.
