Balanced Tourism - Bodental
Tourism concept for the regenerative development of the Bodental living and leisure area

Motivation und initial situation

In recent years, the Bodental valley has seen a sharp rise in conflicts of interest and use due to constantly increasing visitor numbers. On peak days – especially in winter – over 1,500 cars are counted, even though there are only around 350 parking spaces in the valley. This leads to cars parking haphazardly along the road, chaotic conditions and discontent among locals and visitors alike.

Together with all stakeholders in the Bodental valley (business owners, locals, farmers, tourists, etc.), a regenerative tourism concept with solution-oriented measures is to be developed. With the involvement of tourism experts, transport and landscape planners, the status quo will be analysed through interviews, workshops and expert reports. The aim is to develop a jointly supported vision for the sustainable design of the living space, as well as concrete measures such as the densification of public transport, traffic flow management, experience space management, visitor guidance measures and making the area more attractive.

Key milestones

As part of the development process, two workshops were held with stakeholders to actively involve all interested parties. The first was a vision workshop in which participants jointly considered the future development and direction of the Bodental valley. Building on this, the subsequent strategy workshop developed initial concrete approaches and measures. Accompanying this, the results of traffic flow measurements provided an important basis for assessing the current situation and deriving measures.

The region at a glance

Wörthersee Rosental region, Carinthia

Nature experience area with 130,000 to 150,000 day visitors per year

The region is known for its unspoilt landscape and diverse hiking and mountaineering opportunities. Popular destinations such as the Meerauge lake and the Märchenwiese fairy tale meadow make it an attractive destination for day trips and excursions. In addition, bilingualism and gentle winter tourism with a small family ski area, high-altitude cross-country ski trails, snowshoeing and ski touring characterise the regional offering.

Experiences and challenges

A key lesson learned from the process so far is that the interests of those involved sometimes diverge greatly – whether between tourism, nature conservation or regional economic concerns.

This clearly shows that further development of the concept will require a great deal of tact and a willingness to compromise on all sides in order to find viable solutions that will be accepted in the long term.
